GLP-1 drugs
SELECT tested weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease without diabetes. Its cardiovascular result does not establish slowed aging, healthy-population benefit or longer life.
Safety and regulatory context: The released WEGOVY label and SELECT safety analysis govern warnings, contraindications and sponsor context. Results for one molecule, formulation and selected population do not transfer automatically to every GLP-1–based drug or to anti-aging use.

Semaglutide reduced cardiovascular events in SELECT—not aging
- Population
- 17,604 adults age 45 or older with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, without diabetes
- Measured
- major cardiovascular events and safety
The randomized result and approved indication are population-specific; anti-aging, healthspan and lifespan claims were not tested.
Does not establish: It does not show that semaglutide makes healthy people live longer, reverses a biological clock, preserves every component of lean tissue, or should be used outside an approved or clinically justified indication. Body-composition changes are not equivalent to frailty, healthspan or lifespan. Results for one molecule, formulation and population do not automatically transfer to every GLP-1–based drug.

DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa2307563
- Population
- 17,604 adults with CVD and BMI at least 27, without diabetes
- Measured
- major cardiovascular events
- Result in released coverage
- Semaglutide reduced SELECT's major cardiovascular event composite in its enrolled population. · SELECT did not test aging reversal, healthspan, or lifespan extension.
- Evidence maturity
- randomized disease-outcome evidence and approved population-specific cardiovascular indication
- Funding / conflicts
- Funding and conflict context is retained in linked reporting; this source record does not separately structure it.
- Limitations
- Established CVD, BMI at least 27, no diabetes; not a healthy-aging population. · Absence of an aging endpoint is not proof of no future effect; it is a current evidence boundary.
The measured result does not establish a general longevity benefit beyond the population, design and outcomes reported.

- Population
- SELECT trial population
- Measured
- adverse events and discontinuation
- Result in released coverage
- Discontinuation and gastrointestinal adverse-event tradeoffs remained material in SELECT.
- Evidence maturity
- randomized disease-outcome evidence and approved population-specific cardiovascular indication
- Funding / conflicts
- Funding and conflict context is retained in linked reporting; this source record does not separately structure it.
- Limitations
- Trial and current regulatory data do not predict an individual's risk; FDA's January 2026 class review found no increased suicidal-behavior or ideation risk, while other label warnings remain.
The measured result does not establish a general longevity benefit beyond the population, design and outcomes reported.
